Sharing my Video Resume experience

with one comment

Hi my name is Beverly Tuggle, and I am a job seeker.

My “job search” has really taken completely out of my comfort zone. I have never liked having my picture taken and now it’s posted on several job sites, LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter. …and then I heard that the new thing to do is to do a video resume. Through LinkedIn, I saw a discussion on being able to post your video resume to a new site called HitechResumes.

I looked at some examples, and then sat down to write my script (needing to keep it under 3 minutes so it can be posted to Facebook). This wasn’t an easy task. Once I had the script like I thought it should be, I began recording my video (no one has to worry about me ever contending for an Oscar). Through another LinkedIn local networking group I found an ad for a local company that does video resumes (CN Video Resumes).

I decided to have them record my video resume for me. Their website had a wealth of information on making a video resume and one of the options was an “Interview” style plus they had many interview questions and suggested a format for answering the questions.

Once I had practiced the questions and answers, I scheduled a time to have them record the video resume. Prior to shooting the video, they rehearsed with me which helped me to calm down since I was still very nervous.

After filming, they edited out some of my nervous habits and sent me the file so I could download it and post it to sites like HitechResumes, LinkedIn, YouTube, Facebook, adding the link to my resume and cover letter and CN Video Resumes posts it to their site for 6 months.

Since posting my video resume, the number of calls to discuss my qualifications has increased and I have been getting actual interviews. Although I was totally out of my comfort zone, it has been a very valuable boost to my job search.

Regards,
Bev

Bringing Multimedia into the CommonApp Essay or Resume

with one comment

There is no better solution than spoken words, to communicate your personality and your passions on life. In today’s highly competitive college admissions, when all things are equal, there is no better way to impress and get the attention of an Admission’s Dean  who is sorting through hundreds of applicants essay’s or resume’s, other than grabbing hold of their visual and audio senses.

Over the last 10 years our society has seen an evolution in photography, videography and computer technologies. Video technology is now widely available with most people having easy access to this technology and society has become video expressive.

By embedding a multimedia clip (audio or video) or “short cover letter” into your commonapp.org essay or resume, your spoken words describing who you are, your passions in life and why you would be a asset as a student and alumni to a college, would surely make one stand out for the rest of the competition.

CommonApp.org help desk has confirmed that their application process does support adobe and word file uploads and will transfer embedded links.

HitechResumes is an internet website offering students who are applying to college the ability to set themselves apart from the rest of the competition. HitechResumes takes a standard document and makes it go Hi-Tech, by embedding multimedia directly into the document. College essays and resumes can now be called a Hi-Tech Essay and Hi-Tech Resume.

I got a job offer using a Video Resume

with 2 comments

Hi, my name is Melanie Meade and I am writing to share my story with those who are like me. First let me tell you little bit about myself. Taking risks has never been one of my strong points, especially when involving new job opportunities. I am a junior at Bridgewater State College. I am majoring in medical technology and going to be a medical technician. I consider myself a jack of all trades bartender, dance instructor and recently got my certification in Zumba, an aerobic dance using Latin music. During the past several years, I have worked part-time jobs to cover my college expenses. I consider myself computer literate, use facebook, can navigate the Internet, and can use standard Microsoft applications. I do not consider myself a computer wiz or a video or camera guru, and have never used YouTube before.

Anyway, when my Aunt, Nancy Shone founder of  HitechResumes, approached me and asked if I would be interested in doing a sample video for her new website, where I could use it to promote my new Zumba skills, I kindly said yes but in reality really wasn’t sure how it could help me. I shared my concerns with her about the amount of time that would be required and I didn’t even own a video camera, let alone know how to get a video from a camera into a computer. But never the less I said yes, why not give it a try. How hard could a 2 minute video be to create? How much time would it actually require?

She assured me that my video creating process really was quite simple and that the website had a Video Guide to help people like me make their own RAW video and all that needed to be done was someone needed to record some footage of me during an actual class. That week she showed up at the studio with her camera, one of those regular video cameras the kind that everyone has. She recorded about 15 minutes, then said have fun and left. The next day she called me and asked if I was ready to record my audio message to be used as the words for my video. I had thought about what I would say and told her I would be over tomorrow to do it. When I got to her house the following day she took out the same video camera. She turned it on, told me to sit next to the camera and to speak clearly. I recorded my audio message reading directly from a script.. She then took the camera and attached it a computer with a cable and with the couple of key strokes my audio message was downloaded to the computer and combined with my video along with some Zumba music.

When I left her house and returned home there was an email from the HitechResumes site it contained my MyWebpage link, along with KeyName and password to the HitechResumes site. The link that she sent me was my own online profile that showcased my video and contact information. She also informed me that I could monitor my video’s views on the site by viewing my stats in my profile It took me a couple of tries to figure how to login, change my profile view my stats and find MyWebpage, but after that I got it. Hmmm, I thought to myself interesting but how can this help me?

So I started brainstorming.

Here is what I came up with. Being a member of the Zumba Network I was listed in the instructor locator section, so why not add my video to the Zumba site. So I added MyWebpage link into my Zumba profile and that’s what brings me to the end of my story, after I added the link I received a call from a  local gym telling me they saw my video resume in the Zumba site  and offered me a job teaching Zumba.

The moral of my story is don’t be afraid of taking risks especially when involving unfamiliar technology. I found my experience to be a very enjoyable experience. It did not take an enormous amount of time and the benefits far exceeded the risks.

Try it out. I am a believer now! IT WORKED FOR ME!

A Brighter Future – a job seekers perspective

with 2 comments

Last Year to my dismay, I found myself caught up in the economic downturn and without a job. I  have been on an exhaustive job search for over the last 7 months, looking for my next career move. I have 25 years of experience in sales and marketing and had the success and longevity of working for only two companies during this period. Last week my job search ended as I accepted a new position. I learned a lot over these last 7 months as a candidate looking for work and not as a Recruiter, Employer, Life Coach or Human Resource person and I want to share my insights with those who are less fortunate than myself and are still searching.

In today’s tough job market, even with the best written resume, It is very difficult to make an impression. I have found that most of the doors that opened for me during my job search where the result of someone knowing me personally and referring me in the organization. I had done in depth networking on foot, including using the internet and all the social media channels.  I also had a professional video resume created which was expensive and spent countless hours reading blog after blog on tips for job searching. I used several versions of my resume when submitting myself as a candidate to show how I matched their search criteria, but at the end of the day my new job success was due to fact that the hiring manager knew me. He knew my personally, the type of sales guy that I was and knew the value that I bring to the organization.

However, not everyone has the luck of knowing the hiring manager, so that is why I am writing about this new technology HitechResumes.com that I discovered during my job search. I was amazed by the technology, believe in it, tried it out and loved it!

 HitechResumes.com is a website offering people a new technology of resumes. Think about resumes and their evolution, aside from different writing styles, what advances have ever been brought to this document? It is amazing stuff.  It takes a standard resume and makes it go Hi-Tech.  Hi-Tech Resumes are customized documents containing standard resume content as well as embedded video or audio directly into a document. Hi-Tech Resumes features;

MS Word and Adobe Acrobat formats
Multimedia embedded content (audio or video)
No larger than a standard resume.
Can be transferred through normal email
Submitted directly to employers and Internet job boards.
Have built in security protection.
Resume enable/disable controls
Resume page view tracking tools

In today’s job hunt companies want to find a candidate that is capable and polished in their craft. That’s why it is so important to have a video or audio that displays these talents. After all, my job success and what made me stand out from the rest of pack was the hiring manager already knew my talents and did not know the others.

Why should resume technology remain status quo, while technology advances all around us. The days of scannable resumes are going to disappear for things that make finding the right candidate simpler. Looking for key words on a resume does not mean that candidate is right for the job, HR managers know this. That means companies will come full circle and will again be relying on their employees to recruit, as well as having candidates use new technologies to better portray themselves and make a lasting impression that plain black and white words do not. Imagine the time savings if your employed friend not only recommends you, but was able to hand the manager a resume that also has a video introducing you. That manager can make a decision to meet with you right away, no need to screen any further.  There is no better way to do this then using the Hi-Tech Resume. Paper info is for reference and Video or Audio will provide the meat for a yes or no in getting an interview.

Look at how we communicate these days newspaper companies are losing millions a week, continue to scale down on their way to closing down. We blog, get our news on the internet from CNN-MSNBC-WSJ-etc. We run our companies through the internet, look at skype and its in roads into the work place. The President of the United States used video to get hired as the leader of our country through standard media but more importantly through internet media such as YouTube and blogs; we did not get the opportunity to interview him personally. He used video and audio media to convey his thoughts to all of us and to convey his trust. I frequently watch AC360 because Anderson Cooper is always on video. I can see his eyes and expressions. Rush Limbaugh has his radio show and also has a ditto cam, but I like seeing him as well in order to believe him. HitechResumes.com offer both audio and video but video, in my opinion, is the media and the wave of the future, SEEING IS BELIEVING.  Those who feel uncomfortable in front of the camera need to get over it and just do it. Stop worrying about discrimination and focus on the positive effect that multimedia will have on furthering them into the interview process.

In addition to this new technology of resume, HitechResumes.com offers a video guide to assist users in recording their video as well as providing video editing services allowing users to spice up their home grown video presentation with music and other video features. In addition they accept previously recorded professional video resumes as long as it is 2 minutes or less in length. I recommend having multiple videos targeting the different types of jobs that you may be applying for.  As far as cost goes not everyone can afford the expense that I did for creating my video resume and HitechResumes.com is very affordable and offer a product for FREE to those who can not afford but still want a Hi-Tech Resume.

In conclusion go try out this new technology. They are in beta phase and giving the video editing away for free. Creating a Hi-Tech Resume does require some effort in planning and creating a video but it was well worth the time and effort. Become comfortable with who you are and being on video. Make it easy for your friends to recommend you for vacant positions as well as unlisted positions. They are your strongest allies so arm them with a strong weapon.

Good luck with your job search
